January is miserable isn’t it? However, one of the good things about Jan/Feb is that all the most Oscar worthy films are released. Because going out to the pictures is about the most perfect thing you can do on a weekend evening in January.
Black Swan I loved before I even saw the trailer for these beautiful graphic teaser posters created by independent design studio La Boca.
Portman is amazing in this film. And the film features one of my all time favourite actors Vincent Cassel who plays the ballet company’s morally dubious creative director.
It did end up being a bit more at the horror end of the spectrum than the psychological thriller it was billed as which I struggled with at times. I also felt that the film relied a bit too much on the stereotype of the ballet world. Did we need to see Portman make herself sick to demonstrate her stress and anxiety for example? Not really, she was acting her ass off conveying the unravelling of her character in a far more complex way than that. Did Portman’s transition from white swan to black swan get hammered home a bit too much through costume? Yes, that just felt a bit clunky to me. These fairly minor complaints aside I was in a state of complete tension the whole movie - unable to look away. Portman surely will get an Oscar for this role, well deserved.
By the way, her co-star (the guy who dances the prince in the Swan Lake) she is now engaged to. And expecting his baby. All I can say about Benjamin Millipied is nice work lady.
